Oakes College
The Oakes College mission was developed in response to a need expressed by students themselves for a college devoted to the support and challenge of all students, but with particular attention to students from historically underrepresented groups. Oakes College provides a community of support and challenge for students from diverse cultural and social backgrounds. Academic programs housed at Oakes include American studies, world literature, and history of consciousness.
Four residence halls each house about 56 students in shared and single rooms; 64 apartment units each house five students in shared and single rooms. Residential buildings were named to honor inspirational figures from the arts, government, politics, literature, and public advocacy. Students choose to live in residence halls or apartments on the basis of themes, special programs, ocean views, or access to individual amenities.
