Be Part of One of Ten Distinctive College Communities

The colleges enrich undergraduate life by providing the advantages of a small college atmosphere within the extensive resources of the larger university. All undergraduate students, whether they live on campus or not, are affiliated with one of the ten residential colleges at UC Santa Cruz.

Entering students choose a college based on many factors—housing and lifestyle preferences, core course offerings, location or physical setting (take the virtual tour), and architecture. Your choice of major does not affect which college you choose. The interdisciplinary nature of each college shapes the unique character of its community, making a college much more than just a place to live.

Receive Advising and Academic Support

All the colleges provide academic advising (e.g. Merrill College) and academic and general campus orientations to help you plan your academic program. In addition, each college has academic preceptors (e.g. Porter College) who can provide advice on academic matters. Psychological and personal counseling is also available in each college, and many colleges have well-developed peer advising and tutoring.

Take Part in College Activities and Events

In addition to housing and academic support, the colleges provide a rich social life by sponsoring many student activities, cultural celebrations, and other social events (e.g. College Nine) on campus. Recent examples include barbecues, carnivals, a hip-hop festival, a visiting hypnotist, comedy nights, open-mike events, and swing dance lessons.

Every college hosts College Night events (e.g. Cowell College), a variety of parties, activities, or dinners that take place as often as once a week at some colleges.

Each college has its own student government and organizations (e.g. Porter College) for students who want to get involved.
